MIT App Inventor – Arduino and Android made simple

The MIT App Inventor is an excellent software all build online (you don’t need to download anything) that gives you the ability to develop android apk (Android program kit) with extreme ease. How? Just using a drag and drop system.

What’s MIT App Inventor?

MIT App Inventor for Android is an open-source web application originally provided by Google. Now maintained by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

MIT App Inventor is designed similarly to Scratch. That’s why is super simple to use, but it incredibly powerful due to its capabilities of developing simple android apks (that will take a lot of effort and knowledge in Java to develop trough Android Studio). Just by clicking and dragging items, it’s really incredible… Particularly what really stand out in our field of robotics, is the ability to use an android device to interact with the Arduino. I’ve made apps such as a remote controller for a fight bot, and a serial com that prints data on your android device from the Arduino, all with no android programming knowledge.

Another remarkable feature of the MIT App Inventor is that it allows you to upload your apks to Google PlayStore. So if you’re creating an apk. That can be used for other projects or applications in general, you can upload it to Google PlayStore. Therefore your apks is accessible to anyone around the world, in no time.

MIT App Inventor is also supported with the Firebase Database extension. This allows people to store data on Google’s firebase.

It’s really a no brainer

Here’s a quick demo of who easy it is to program android apks with MIT App Inventor. In the video, they show a tutorial on how to create a “talk to me” apk, see it yourself and take into consideration that the video lasts only 5 minutes.

Conclusion

If you want to dabble in the Android world, but you don’t want the get lost in all the programming. This is the solution you need. Once you understand the basics. The blocks you can use when to use them, all the functionalities built-in.  It’s going to exponentially increase your capabilities when designing a new project. Because now you can go way beyond and use your cellphone to completely new level.

Hope this was helpful. See you in the next post.
